Sita Trust Update

Posted by St Werburghs - 20/12/12 09:58AM - 0 Comments - news, projects
Our Outdoor Spaces project has been developing over the last few months with the new addition of planters, benches and a pond, built by the Bristol Wood Recycling Project and funded by Arise Cabot Circus Fund as well as by donations from Airbus, KPMG and Burgess Salmon.
Part of the funding will contribute to a new security system of cameras around the car park, gardens and entrance to the building.

A large groups of volunteers from KPMG and Burgess and Salmon assisted with moving over three tons of compost, sanding and varnishing the new benches and re-planting. The planters will be used in the new year for growing vegetables as part of the Raking and Baking project.

During the spring of 2012 our railings, war memorial and brick wall were also restored and re-painted, with some areas of railing removed for greater access. This was funded by SITA Environmental Trust.

CCTV has now been installed on the outdoor grounds of St Werburghs Centre, with great thanks to Airbus for donating money towards the Outdoor Spaces project.

St Werburghs Centre always welcome volunteer help towards developing the outdoor spaces. Please get in touch if you are an individual or business looking to get involved in a team building day.

Linda Bell to retire from St Werburghs Community Centre

The St Werburghs Community Centre, one of Bristol's busiest and most loved community buildings, will mark the end of an era on Friday, 31 August 2012 with the retirement of Centre Director and Company Secretary Linda Bell after 13 years service.

Linda has been at the Centre since 1999. Before that she spent many years working in both the statutory and voluntary sector, specialising since 1988 in the management and development of community buildings. During her time at St Werburghs, Linda has been instrumental in turning the Centre into the vibrant, popular community venue it is today. Linda's achievements over her 13 years' service culminated in the securing funding for the Centre's £1m capital project, which saw the existing building refurbished and the construction of a spacious new annexe. The improvements to the Centre under the capital project have allowed it to transform from a well-used community centre into a modern community hub that's fit for the 21st Century and able to benefit far more users than ever before.

The Centre will be saying a fond farewell to Linda on Friday, 31 August with a celebration at midday to which all friends and well-wishers are welcome to attend.

St Werburghs Community Centre has been run by St Werburghs Community Association since 1973. In 1999 SWCA took over the management of the building from Bristol City Council, and registered as a charity and a company. It is a very busy and accessible community resource for the communities of East Bristol, and Communities of Interest City Wide. The centre offers office space for four voluntary organisations who also work within local communities, and a wide range of meeting rooms, event spaces and facilities. The centre hosts social, cultural, educational, support and advice services.
