News Release on Green Tourism Silver Award

Posted by St Werburghs - 16/02/16 03:42PM - 0 Comments - news

St Werburghs Community Centre is one of Bristol’s busiest and most loved community buildings. It offers a range of meeting rooms and event spaces within its beautiful Victorian building and the modern eco friendly annexe. The team and the board are delighted to have achieved Silver status in the highly accredited Green Tourism Awards.

The award received in January 2016 is down to a strong overall commitment to sustainability across a range of areas. St Werburghs Community Association has put tremendous efforts to make the Victorian community building warm, more energy efficient, fully accessible and as sustainable as possible.

During the Capital Project we have replaced our old oil heating system with new gas boilers. Thanks to that all our rooms in the main building can be controlled individually and we can monitor our energy use against weather and our room use. We also rewired old electrics and installed new energy efficient lights throughout, all of that complete with sensor controls for further energy saving.

The Centre scored very high on innovation as a result of building our new modern and eco-friendly annexe which boasts a bank of PV panels, a Sedum (grass) roof, ‘Warmcell’ insulation, which is manufactured from 100% recycled waste paper and sunlight tubes designed to capture and intensify natural daylight.

Goska Ong, Centre Director says: “We continue to strive to be even more ‘green’; we are using only fair trade refreshments for our events and carefully chosen environmentally friendly cleaning products. Due to its excellent and friendly customer service the Centre had always been one of the most active and well-used resources in the city. We have recently built an eco friendly storeroom, which has allowed us to utilise our spaces even better – we now have two additional offices available to let by a community group or a voluntary organisation, which will provide further services for the local communities.”
