Community Centre helps local residents discover the value of food from pasture to plate

Posted by St Werburghs - 22/09/11 12:21pm - 0 Comments - news

Bristol residents can discover the life cycle and value of food by learning how to grow and then cook their own fruit, vegetables and herbs with a free cooking and gardening course.

The Raking and Baking project run by the St Werburghs Community Centre.

Goska Ong, St Werburghs Centre manager, says: “The project is a great way for the people of Bristol to learn more about the origin of their food and some important life skills. Growing your own fresh vegetables and fruit is relatively simple and cheap, and learning how to make the most of this healthy food is obviously a big benefit.”

At the gardening sessions people learn how to manage a small garden using permaculture principles. The workshops include sessions on container growing, composting, sowing seeds, companion planting and harvesting. As well as gardening for food production there are also culinary and medicinal herb gardens.

The cooking sessions will focus on how to cook fresh, healthy and well-balanced meals and how to use the surplus of crops to last all year by making chutneys, cordials and jams. We will also run sessions on international cuisine which will include Italian, West Indian, Japanese, Somali and varied Asian cuisine.

“The best thing is that this isn’t something you need lots of specialist equipment for necessarily”, continues Goska. “People can learn the basics then take away what they’ve learned and do it at home. You don’t even need a garden; a window box can be used to grow fresh herbs.”

Raking and Baking is part of the St Werburghs Community Centre Outdoor Spaces project. The project aims to transform the area around the Centre into a garden for anyone in the community and further afield to use and enjoy. The project had a kick-start thanks to Stokes Croft-based Teleperformance raising money to build benches and flowerbeds for the front garden.

However, we are eager to find more sponsors and volunteers to help us with various elements of the Outdoor Spaces project such as a sensory garden and secure bike parking. If you would find this interesting or have any questions please get in touch. Contact: Goska Ong, Centre Manager at St Werburghs Community Centre on 0117 955 1351 or e-mail office@stwerburghs.org.uk
